A new era of safety is just around the corner and Honda is leading the way. A collision-free world is the ultimate goal of Honda's "Safety for Everyone" concept, and the company's latest V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) technologies are spearheading efforts to enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians. One of the latest technologies to spawn from this project is an industry-first Virtual Tow feature. When you find out what it can do, you'll feel like you've stepped into a science fiction novel.

As illustrated in the graphic above, Honda's Virtual Tow feature employs vehicle-to-vehicle communication technology that would allow drivers in need of assistance to send out an SOS Beacon to surrounding motorists. Other drivers would have the option to respond to the help signal and head to the location of the car in need. Then, once aligned in front of the car, the assisting driver would engage a Following Mode. In this mode, Honda's automated systems and connected-car technology would kick in and enable the car in need to follow the "tow" vehicle.

Honda's Virtual Tow technology would be useful for motorists in distress who are unable to drive and need to be led to the nearest hospital, for example. The automaker is still in the process of further developing the feature, but it and other technologies like automated freeway merging and lane changing could be featured in the Accord, Civic, Odyssey and other Honda models in the not-so-distant future.
