Honda is a world-renowned automaker for many reasons, including safety, technology, and affordability. Now, Honda is aiming for another great feat in the automotive world: developing technology that allows electric vehicles to recharge on the go. This technology, called in-motion wireless charging, allows EVs to charge while driving. The novel technology eliminates the inconvenience of stopping to charge at public charging stations and reduces the frequency of home charging needed.
What is Honda's New In-Motion Wireless Charging Technology?
Recently, Honda Motors announced that it has developed underlaying technology for a WPT road system, which allows electric vehicles to charge as they're driving rather than needing to navigate to a charging station or charge at home. Honda says this technology will allow EV drivers to enjoy greater freedom on the road while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of mobility products and services. The technology, Honda says, is being built in cooperation with Taisei and Taisei Rotec. Together, they will provide the equipment necessary to support a high-response DC power supply system, high-power-density receiver/transmitter units compatible with DC power distribution, and the associated technology to embed charging capabilities in existing roadways. The new infrastructure, Honda says, can easily be incorporated into paved road surfaces. The technology, once deployed, will enable charging for passenger and commercial EVs, which is a breakthrough in the auto industry.
Progress for Honda
Honda's latest announcement aligns with the company's goals of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. Honda has been striving to connect with audiences around the world on the importance and benefits of EVs, and it believes this current technological breakthrough will help convey those sentiments. Along with installing EV charging infrastructure in roadways, Honda continues to take various initiatives to improve EV convenience, including the launch of Honda Charge, an EV charging network service in Japan.
Honda EVs
Honda has several electric vehicles poised to take advantage of on-road and other charging options. One is the Honda Prologue, a midsize electric SUV with sufficient range, comfort, and space. The Prologue also features a Google-based infotainment system and top-notch safety features. The Honda Prologue also stands out for its comfortable cabin.
Honda also makes other vehicles, including the Accord, Civic, and CR-V, that are available with electric and traditional gasoline power.
