Car Not Accelerating

If your car is having problems accelerating, it's time to do some troubleshooting. There can be various reasons that cause poor acceleration, so you'll want to have a skilled mechanic check out your vehicle to see what's wrong. Poor acceleration is often related to a sensor or a filter in the engine that is contaminated or broken. You may also notice other problems with your car, such as a "Check Engine" light that comes on or other signs of poor performance and handling. The four reasons below are some of the most common causes of acceleration problems, and they may explain the problems you are having with your car.

Dirty Oxygen Sensor or Mass Air Flow Sensor

An oxygen sensor and the mass airflow sensor also called the MAF sensor, help regulate the amount of air that goes into the engine. The oxygen sensor makes sure that the engine has enough clean air to help the car operate. If these sensors become dirty or wear out, they won't properly regulate airflow into the engine. An engine that does not have the air it needs to operate will reduce performance in your car, and it may trigger the engine warning light to come on. Both issues require a trip to the dealership for cleaning or parts replacement.

Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor

Another issue that you might have with your car's mechanical system is a problem with the throttle position sensor. The throttle position sensor is a small part of the engine. The throttle position sensor works with the engine to make sure that it has enough fuel. The sensor controls the flow of fuel into the engine and instructs the engine to perform according to your driving conditions. If the sensor breaks, it won't monitor fuel intake into the engine, affecting the car's performance.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The main role of the fuel filter is to trap harmful contaminants that may otherwise enter the engine and cause problems. The fuel filter has a protective cover that stops contaminants from getting into the engine and fuel system. Over time, the filter can't process contamination correctly if it gets too dirty.

Dirty Air Filter

Like the fuel filter, the air filter on your car needs to be changed regularly so that it keeps dirt and debris out of the engine. When the filter gets too dirty, it allows contaminants to get into the engine rather than blocking them, causing performance problems as a result.
