The 2016 Honda Civic Type R European model wowed audiences when it was unveiled at this year's Geneva Motor Show with its fierce looks and 306-horsepowe, 2.0L four-cylinder engine. At first sight, it's clear the hot hatch is not a car you’d want to dismiss on the track and its recent record-setting Nürburgring time proves it is indeed a showstopper.

Clocking in at 7 minutes 50.63 seconds, the Honda Civic Type R recently became the fastest front-wheel-drive performance hatchback to lap the Nürburgring. The record was set by a Type R development car with the same technical specs as the upcoming production model, slated to land in Europe this summer. Fitted with a standard drivetrain, suspension, brakes and exhaust, the Civic Type R was able to surpass the previous record time of 7 minutes 54 seconds held by the Renaultsport Mégane 275 Trophy-R. Although a roll cage, installed for safety purposes, added weight to the Type R, the car's front passenger seat, stereo and air conditioning were removed to ensure the car's weight was still in line with that of the production model's. With this achievement under their belt, Honda has plans to set an entirely new record with a production model sometime this year, cementing the 2016 Civic Type R as one of the fastest hatches to ever hit the Nürburgring.
