Honda Celebrates 50 Years of Research and Development in America

Honda has historically stood out for its innovation and cutting-edge vehicle designs, but now the world-renowned vehicle manufacturer has another milestone to celebrate. Honda is now celebrating its 50th year of research and development in the U.S., a notable milestone for the automaker. Honda is celebrating its 50th anniversary across its entire spectrum of mechanics, which includes power equipment products, aviation, powersports, and aerospace in addition to vehicles.

Looking Back in History

Honda's foray into the US market started in 1975 when it constructed its first research and development facility in Southern CA. Honda's first facility served as the epicenter for its vehicle and product research and testing, enabling the vehicle and equipment manufacturer to develop newer, more sophisticated, and safer products.

From its initial beginnings as a single-facility company in California to a national presence, Honda is now leading the way among auto and equipment manufacturers nationwide for automotive safety, material design, and advanced research. Today, Honda has over 20 locations across the US that are involved in research and development.

Honda's Current R&D Facilities

With its nationwide presence, Honda has grown from a one-facility operation to a company that threatens serious competition. Honda now has advanced R&D facilities in key locations across the country, including Colorado, Michigan, Indiana, Florida, Ohio, South Carolina, and North Carolina, in addition to its original location in California.

Although its facilities are spread across the country, they all share the same mission: to produce nearly 40 different types of Honda and Acura vehicles. While they operate nationwide, Honda's R&D facilities share the same mission: to build Honda and Acura vehicles and equipment that are as safe and technologically advanced as possible.

Honda's efforts have paid off so far, as the automaker's vehicles have received numerous awards for “North American Car of the Year” and “North American Truck of the Year.” Along with its auto awards, Honda has also earned recognition for its powersports and power equipment innovations, as well as its HondaJet performance.

Honda's Advanced Research

Always looking to the future, Honda has now announced a focus on carbon capture, quantum, and nanotechnologies. Honda is seeking to expand its innovative capabilities and partnerships by exploring advanced research in energy, battery technology, and hydrogen fuel cell technology. Honda also plans to explore options for mobility-challenged drivers and improved human-software experiences for its customers.
