Under Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations, the world's largest automakers will need to raise fuel economy for car and light-duty trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. Honda is getting ahead of the game early by working to release an all-new plug-in hybrid and battery-powered electric car by the year 2018.
Honda executives announced that the new models will use the company's advanced new Honda Earth Dreams powertrain technology, which delivers both fun and eco-friendly performance using compact, lightweight and responsive powerplants. Furthermore, Honda said it will tackle its ultra-low carbon emissions goals by further utilizing its two- and three-motor hybrid systems.
As for changes that you'll see a bit sooner in the pipeline, Honda has stated that by the end of the year the company will introduce new Earth Dreams-based four-cylinder VTEC turbo engines, which will be produced right here in the states at the Anna Engine Plant in Sidney, Ohio.
Honda already produces popular alternative-fuel vehicles like the Accord Hybrid and Plug-in, but we're always excited to see new gas-electric options introduced to the Honda family and look forward to the day that these new additions make it to Bell Honda!
