Honda is joining forces with Hitachi to create a new type of safety system for their cars: a combined breathalyzer and smart key.
The automaker is hoping this new device will help cut back on drunk driving by giving people easy access to a breathalyzer. This new system is still in the prototype stage, but even now, it can differentiate between human breath and other forms of gases, meaning that it will be difficult to trick or beat.
The device will also be tamper-proof and give accurate alcohol level measurements in as little as 3 seconds. Drivers will be able to read their results on a display, hopefully helping them to decide to stay home or call a cab if they are inebriated.
If the driver does decide to head out on the road, the smart key embedded in the device will prevent the car from starting. These types of ignition interlock devices are becoming more common in the U.S., with the NHTSA even looking into making them a standard feature on many new car models.
We are excited and interested to see what Honda’s final breathalyzer product will be after its done with its prototype phase. For now, remember to always appoint a designated driver when going out on the town.
