Recently, Honda Motor Company Ltd. announced it would discontinue the Insight hybrid sedan production in the United States at the end of this year. However, the company also confirmed that a new hybrid version of the Civic sedan in the U.S. market would start in 2020. A new hybrid version of the CR-V sport utility vehicle starting in 2023.
In a statement, Honda gave a reason for the decision to discontinue Insight. It was based on "a thorough evaluation of Honda's product lineup and a need to focus our resources on other new and exciting products." The company remains committed to developing "environmentally friendly and advanced powertrain technologies."
Insight has been available in the U.S. market since 1999. Still, its market share has dwindled in recent years as more fuel-efficient SUVs have become popular.
Saying Goodbye to the Honda Insight
Honda has confirmed that it will end production of its Insight this summer. Instead, the automaker is preparing for the arrival of new gasoline-electric cars. It includes a Civic Hybrid. Honda has yet to release any details about the new hybrids. Still, they are expected to be more fuel-efficient than Insight.
Honda refreshed the Insight in 2018, but the last vehicle will leave the Indiana plant in June. It is thought that this move is in response to the increasing demand for hybrids, especially in the United States.
Honda did not indicate if the Hybrid Civic will have a hatchback like the ones in Europe. It could also be a sedan. One possibility is that Honda will produce both versions and let the buyer choose, but this has yet to be confirmed. It also needs to be clear what engine the new Civic Hybrid will use. Some reports say it will be a 1.5-liter engine, while others say it will be a 1.3-liter engine. But, again, a decision has yet to be made.
